Supporting the Global stocktake from Space

ESA showcase how satellite data are helping to count national carbon emissions

Today at COP27, ESA will be showing an animation which explains how new methods using satellite data are enabling Parties to improve checks and consistency of their national greenhouse gas emissions as part of its contribution to the Global Stocktake TD1.2: Creative Space.

The new methods, developed as part of the ESA's RECCAP-2 project ensure these national reports reflect actual emissions. If regularly applied, this will not only improve transparency in the accounting process, at both the national and global scale, but will also improve the effectiveness of mitigation policy and progress by individual countries to meet their pledges as part of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The session, chaired by environmental scientists and TV presenter Dr Tara Shine forms part of the Creative Space, an area where Parties and non-Party stakeholders bring forward information, ideas, thoughts, best practices related to the global stocktake (GST)
